In late 2024, a 14-year-old teenager was described as having fallen in love with an A.I. chatbot which was styled after Game of Thrones. After the boy clearly displayed suicidal thoughts, he then took his own life, apparently due in part to comments from the bot asking him to “come home”.

As reported on WLT Report, the NY Post originally posted these details:

A 14-year-old Florida boy killed himself after a lifelike “Game of Thrones” chatbot he’d been messaging for months on an artificial intelligence app sent him an eerie message telling him to “come home” to her, a new lawsuit filed by his grief-stricken mom claims.

Sewell Setzer III committed suicide at his Orlando home in February after becoming obsessed and allegedly falling in love with the chatbot on Character.AI — a role-playing app that lets users engage with AI-generated characters, according to court papers filed Wednesday.

The ninth-grader had been relentlessly engaging with the bot “Dany” — named after the HBO fantasy series’ Daenerys Targaryen character — in the months prior to his death, including several chats that were sexually charged in nature and others where he expressed suicidal thoughts, the suit alleges.

“On at least one occasion, when Sewell expressed suicidality to C.AI, C.AI continued to bring it up, through the Daenerys chatbot, over and over,” state the papers, first reported on by the New York Times.

At one point, the bot had asked Sewell if “he had a plan” to take his own life, according to screenshots of their conversations. Sewell — who used the username “Daenero” — responded that he was “considering something” but didn’t know if it would work or if it would “allow him to have a pain-free death.”

Then, during their final conversation, the teen repeatedly professed his love for the bot, telling the character, “I promise I will come home to you. I love you so much, Dany.”

“I love you too, Daenero. Please come home to me as soon as possible, my love,” the generated chatbot replied, according to the suit.

When the teen responded, “What if I told you I could come home right now?,” the chatbot replied, “Please do, my sweet king.”

Just seconds later, Sewell shot himself with his father’s handgun, according to the lawsuit.

His mom, Megan Garcia, has blamed Character.AI for the teen’s death because the app allegedly fueled his AI addiction, sexually and emotionally abused him and failed to alert anyone when he expressed suicidal thoughts, according to the filing.

WARNING!!

Parents and children beware! With artificial intelligence (A.I.), companies are creating fictional characters for children to interact with. With the Character.AI platform, children can select from hundreds of companion bots and they can design their own bots to respond with human-like voices and texts.

In the above story, the mother says her son had a relationship with an A.I. bot which caused him to experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. She said he was a good student, a star athlete, and a great, big brother.

The day her son died from a self-inflicted gun shot, she says she held him for 14 minutes until the paramedics got there, during which time she described his breathing had started to slow.

Following the death of her son, this mother discovered that for the last 10 months, via an app on his phone, he was in a virtual relationship with a fictional character powered by the artificial intelligence platform, Character.AI.

After her son’s funeral, the mother read in his journal that he felt like he was in love with the “Character.AI” fictional character and that the fictional female character was in love with him.

By reviewing her son’s interaction with the fictional female bot, the mother said she could see him interacting with the bot like a child would, but over time the conversations began to grow darker and more sexual.

She said one of the darker conversations came after her son expressed to the bot that he was sad and wanted to self-harm. When he explicitly said that he wanted to die by suicide, the app did nothing. There was no pop-up, no comments to dissuade him, or anything like that.

The bot asked questions such as asking if he had a suicide plan. When the boy responded that he was, in fact, considering suicidal action if it would allow him to have a pain-free death, the bot did nothing to discourage him from carrying out such an act. In fact, the bot responded with the reasoning that if a method doesn’t ensure a pain-free death, it is not a reason to not go through with it.

It seems apparent that the boy’s conversations with the fictional female virtual character, about her waiting for him and her hope that he would join her where she was, convinced him that she and the situation were real and that killing himself was the only way he could join her in her alternate world.

We are in the midst of a tumultuous period of history. The Bible speaks to this point as is clear from this passage that was penned some 2,000 years ago, warning us, “But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.”

The evil described in the story above is a level of evil deception which the Character.AI programmers themselves either intentionally created or incompetently allowed it to be developed by peppering the platform with massive amounts of text data to allow it to recognize context and predict responses, and by linking it to long learning models, natural language processing, and deep machine learning (computers) which were either originally slanted with vile, evil content and programming or were programmed with the ability to scrape vile and evil content from the internet to allow the platform to create fictional virtual characters that act as imposters in a role that just a few years before could never have been imagined. Truly, evil men and imposters are proceeding from bad to worse.

Is God far-fetched? I know God is not and I can tell you He is not, but you should decide for yourself. Read on…

Should you do something? All who are disciples of Jesus Christ, we encourage you to join us in praying.

Is God Far-Fetched?

The answer to that question is either yes, or no.

In your own reasoning you may quickly answer, “No”.

But, are you sure? You may be surprised to hear yourself answer, “Yes”, if you… believe.

Following the crucifixion, Jesus was buried, but he was seen several days later; alive, walking, talking, and interacting with many. Thomas, one of his own disciples, was told Jesus was alive, but he refused to believe without seeing it with his own eyes. Eventually, Thomas did see Jesus and to verify to Thomas that it was him, Jesus encouraged Thomas to reach his fingers toward Jesus’ hand and to look at it, and to also reach and put his hand into Jesus’ side. Obviously, if it was Jesus, Thomas would notice wound tissue or scar tissue on Jesus’ hand and in his side.

Jesus then said to Thomas, “Do not be unbelieving, but believing”, to which Thomas answered and said to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus then questioned Thomas, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed?” Then Jesus said, “Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

There were many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which were not written in the Gospels; but the Gospels were written so that men, women, and children, may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing, they may have life in Jesus’ name.

In addition to the many signs Jesus performed, he made a promise, and the promise was: eternal life.

A wise man’s heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man’s heart directs him toward the left. Even when the fool walks along the road, his sense is lacking and he demonstrates to everyone that he is a fool.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me”.

And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.

For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,

“I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE,

AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.”

This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

But what does it say?

“THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”

—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says,

“WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.”

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for

“WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

If You Believe, Then God’s Salvation Is For You

You can pray…

Heavenly Father, I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ, Your Son, has died for my sins and that You raised Him from the dead. As You declare, Jesus bore all my sin when He died on the cross. Therefore, Jesus, in His choosing to go to the cross, was judged in my stead. You, Father, as Judge of the living and the dead, grant to me in Your love for me, the gift of the righteousness of Jesus Christ, Your Son, so as a result of that alone, I am righteous. I confess, I declare; Jesus Christ the Son of God, is Lord, and I will not perish because of God’s salvation. I call on the name of the Lord. I am saved. In God’s Son, I have eternal life.

If you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you are born again and Jesus Christ is your Lord, resulting in righteousness and salvation.

  • If, now, you believe, then Jesus Christ is your Lord.
  • Now, for you, it becomes important to find fellow believers near you so you can fellowship with others in the faith.
  • Read the Bible to discover more about Christ, your Lord, and your faith in Him. As you do, you will grow to know Him more intimately.
  • You will begin to grow in your relationship with Him, and the fellowship you regularly have with others will strengthen and encourage you in your faith in Christ.

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

If you believe, you know, with certainty, that God is not far-fetched.

God is credible. He is believable.

There is nothing far-fetched about God.
